Salceda orders ban on shellfish transport, sale in Albay

Legazpi City--Governor Joey Sarte Salceda signed today Executive Order No. 19-2008 banning the transport and/or sale of shellfish in the Province of Albay, and will be enforceable until after the  Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) lifts the ban in shellfish.

The order came out after the BFAR issued Shellfish Bulletin No. 25 Last October 9, 2008, imposing shellfish ban on the areas along the coastal waters of Milagros in Masbate, within Sorsogon Bay in Sorsogon and in Juaag Lagoon in Matnog,  Sorsogon.

The order mandates that all shellfish such as tahong and Acetes sp. or alamang gathered from said areas are not safe for human consumption. Fish, squids, shrimps and crabs are safe for consumption, provided that they are fresh and washed thoroughly, and internal organs such as gills and intestines are removed before cooking.

The order was immediately circulated among the cities and municipalities in Albay through the concerned mayors for their appropriate action on the matter that concerns the health of Albayano consumers.

With the Order comes a strict inspection of all marine and fish products at PNP checkpoints in Albay.  Shellfish are subject to summary confiscation and their carriers shall be held for investigation. (MNGonzales/AlbayPIO)

US envoy notes Salceda's support of USAID

US Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney recently thanked Albay Governor Joey Sarte Salceda for joining her at the USAID turn-over ceremony in Barangay Tagaytay, Camalig, Albay last October 24.

In a letter dated October 30, Kenney conveyed to the Governor her appreciation for the latter's support of the US government through its USAID efforts in Bicol “to bring relief to the victims of Typhoon Reming,” and noted “the remarkable progress that has been made” since her announcement last year of the USAID grant to disadvantaged Albayanos particularly in the municipalities of Camalig and Guinobatan which were among the hardest hit by the calamity in the province.

The US envoy expressed her regrets at being unable to see Salceda during one of the Albay executive's recent briefings in Manila, even as she extended her personal birthday greetings to the Governor who celebrated his birthday last Ocotber 26.

Kenney requested the Governor to likewise extend her thanks to Guinobatan Mayor Juan Garcia and Camalig Mayor Carlos Baldo for joining them at the hand-over rites as well as for their ongoing support of the USAID project. (GBGuidote/PIO, Nov. 10, 08)
